Portugal defeat Turkey 2-0

So Portugal defeated Turkey a couple of days ago in the second match of the Euro 08 competition. It was a well-balanced game even though Portugal held most of the possession. Turkey played well, especially Kazim Kazim who was always a headache down that right flank however Tuncay wasn’t effective at all and needs some bench time. Also there were a few dives which the ref really should have acted on as it’s the part of the game that needs to go.

In the end Real Madrid’s Pepe made a great run through the middle and finished a nice one-two to open the scoring and then Portugal made it two at the death to put the match beyond doubt. I’m still not sure why Quaresma didn’t make an appearance or even start. I guess Simao is very important because of his set-piece ability but Quaresma is a better winger. Towards the end of the match it made sense to add more defensive players to maintain the score I just hope he gets to play in the next match.

France vs England 1-0

Posted on March 27, 2008. Filed under: International | Tags: , , , , |

England was handed defeat in Paris last night by their neighbours across the channel. The only goal scored was from the penalty spot after England keeper James took down Anelka. Ribery stepped up to convert and sent James the wrong way.

England never really seemed to trouble France as they delivered some very solid defending and also caused no end of trouble up the other end through their speedy flanks and the dangerous Anelka. The match also marked Beckham’s 100th cap although it wasn’t a particularly memorable performance by him. France look to be well prepared for the upcoming Euro competition.

Brazil vs Sweden 1-0

Posted on March 27, 2008. Filed under: International, Video | Tags: , , |

Brazil played Sweden at the Emirates stadium in England last night and it was the youngster, Alexandre Pato that came off the bench to score the winning goal for his country in his first game for the Selecao. The game was to mark the 50th anniversary of the 1958 world cup final that was played in Sweden.

During the first half both teams had a lot of chances but nothing that was troubling either keeper all that much. There were a lot of substitutions throughout the match as expected for a friendly but two of them proved decisive. Shabaan replaced Sweden’s keeper at the restart while Pato came on after 60 minutes and and 12 minutes later the ball was in the back of the net. Shabaan had cleared the ball only as far as Pato who was able to snatch it then lift and curl it into the open goal.

Dunga was cautious about all the hype surrounding Pato and insists that he is not a starting member of the squad yet. He still has very little experience as a player and although Dunga admits he is very similar to a young Ronaldo aka The Phenomenon, at 18 years of age he shouldn’t have too much pressure on him. The youngster has been humble and asked for comparisons to Ronaldo and Pele to stop as he still has everything to prove.

There was only one goal in last nights friendly held in Dublin and it was the in form Robinho, given the nourishment to shine under Schuster’s Madrid. Brazil held most of the possession throughout the match but did not find the net until 67 minutes as Ireland held up to their attacks. A pin-point accurate finish as the ball was slotted through legs, defenders, keeper and far post. Check out the goal highlights below (excuse the dodgy music).

Italy vs Portugal 3-1

Italy defeated Portugal 3-1 last night in Zurich and although it was a friendly, they proved that they mean business for this coming Euro as they chase the double which only France has managed so far in 1998 and 2000.

The first goal came right before half-time as Toni converted a Grosso cross. Soon after the restart, Pirlo found the net through a deflected strike. Quaresma was able to pull one back on 76 minutes but no sooner had the celebrations ended that Italy had restored it’s two goal advantage through Quagliarella. Check out the action in the highlights below.

Australia defeat Qatar 3-0

Goals from Josh Kennedy, Tim Cahill and Marco Bresciano were more than enough to see off Qatar in Melbourne today. Their 2010 campaign is off to a flying start with the convincing win at Telstra dome.

All the goals were scored in the first half starting with Josh Kennedy who towered above the Qatar defense to place a header into the lower right of the goal from an Emerton cross. Seven minutes later it was Tim Cahill who rose up with a header of his own and finally Bresciano side footed a beauty into the net off a Scott McDonald ball.

Over 50,000 turned up to cheer on the Socceroos but on a sad note, Craig Moore stated that it would be his last game with the national side. Highlights below.

Africa cup of nations action

Posted on January 31, 2008. Filed under: International, Video | Tags: , , , , , , , , |

Thought I’d chuck up some highlights from the African cup of nations that is currently being played in Ghana. It’s a really entertaining competition to watch and isn’t always given enough coverage. The pressures of club competition and strict tactics don’t apply here, it’s all about that audacious run past several defenders or that rocket shot from 30 yards plus outside the box.

Ivory Coast vs Mali (3-0)

Goals scored by Drogba (9), Zoro (54) and Djakpa (86).

Cameroon vs Sudan (3-0)

Goals scored by Eto’o (28 pen), Ali Elkhidir (34 o.g.) and Eto’o (90).

Nigeria vs Benin (2-0)

Goals scored by Obi (53) and Yakubu (86).

Ghana vs Morocco (2-0)

Goals scored by Essien (26) and Muntari (45)

Brazil vs Uruguay

Posted on November 23, 2007. Filed under: International, Video | Tags: , , , , , , , , |

Brazil played against Uruguay a few days ago as part of the 2010 world cup qualification campaign. The match was played out at Sao Paulo’s Morumbi stadium and was a chance for several players to return to the grounds of the club that started it all for them (SPFC). Kaka’, Mineiro and Luis Fabiano all left SPFC to move on to other challenges but against Uruguay they were certainly less than spectacular.

Even though Luis Fabiano bagged a brace that won Brazil the match, it was a somewhat unjust result for Uruguay who were moving the ball well and were on the scoreboard after 7 minutes. Brazil’s goals were certainly not outstanding, the first a lucky deflection through the keepers legs and the second, a moment of poor clearing and marking to leave Fabiano mostly unchallenged to slap the ball in from around the penalty spot. Kaka’, Ronaldinho, Robinho and Gilberto Silva were playing well below par but luck favoured Brazil and 3 more points were collected.

See the goals below.

Just a quick post about another new up and coming star. Brazil’s hero of the under-17s south american cup. His name is Lulinha and he currently plays for Corinthians in Brazil. He’s also attracted the attention of Chelsea with a couple of scouts sent to watch him in league action impressed with what they saw! They’re apparently very keen to sign him in the January transfer window because they already missed out on another rising star in Alexandre Pato (signed by Milan).

He ended up scoring 12 goals during the south American championships which is highly impressive as a midfielder/second striker and considering that was in only 7 matches! Check him out in action below, as Brazil hand Bolivia a hefty drubbing.
